PASSIVE HOUSE:™ CAN A HOME REALLY BE HEATED WITH JUST A HAIR DRYER?

Come to this informative demo and learn about ‘Passive House’ standards and methods used to create an ultra-energy efficient house. ‘Passive House’ dwellings can achieve an energy savings of as much as 90% compared to conventional housing. Demo Topics will include designing for your local climate, highly insulated walls, ceilings and windows, air tight construction and heat recovery ventilation systems. DEMO LEADER:  DON SCHUBA is a local architectural designer, who has received his ‘Passive House’ Certification

HOW TO ACHIEVE A NET-ZERO HOME USING INSULATED CONCRETE FORMS (ICFS)

The next wave of green buildings will aim to be net-zero - buildings that sell energy back to the grid instead of buying it. The use of insulated concrete forms promotes this sustainable, green building practice. Discover how the foam in a concrete form wall can provide exceptionally high thermal resistance that combined with high thermal mass and reduced air infiltration can save you enormous amounts on heating and cooling overhead expenses. ALL ABOUT HEAT PUMPS

Though widely acknowledged as the most efficient heating system for Olympic Peninsula homes, heat pumps remain a major investment. But did you know that most heat pump installations leak 10% - 20% of their heat into attics and crawlspaces, counteracting their efficiencies? After this presentation, you’ll know why heat pumps can be so efficient, and what you can do to ensure you get the most bang for your heat pump buck. The focus will be on industry best practice Performance Tested Comfort System heat pump installation standards developed by Northwest utilities. Demo Leader: mattias Järvegren, Clallam County PUD Utility Services Advisor, manages Clallam PUD’s residential, commercial and industrial weatherization and renewable energy projects, and is also a Building Performance Specialist with the Northwest ENERGY STAR© Homes program.

DIY CONCRETE PAVERS; EASIER THAN IT SOUNDS. 

If outdoor designing is your passion, this demonstration is for you! Come prepared to take notes on making two “Do It Yourself” home projects easy and successful.  Learn how simple it is to install concrete pavers to beautify home and garden. Discover helpful tips and tricks to help you transform an outdoor space like a pro. DEMO LEADER:  JACK MARSHALL is a Landscape Designer employed at Blake Tile and Stone.

NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING

This presentation will focus on of Permaculture-based landscape design principles and concepts that produce multiple benefits for people and the environment, including food production, microclimate modification, beauty, storm water management, and wildlife habitat. DEMO LEADER: JOE HOLTROP is Clallam Conservation District’s manager. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in landscape architecture, as well as a Masters of Adult Education. He has been a certified Permaculture consultant since 1987.

TIPS AND TRICKS OF TRIM

Take away the guess work and learn some of the skills and tricks a frame carpenter (or homeowner) should know before doing trim carpentry. During this demo, Chas will install a pre-hung door and two or more styles of trim while discussing the importance of visualizing the finished product and the logic of trim. Many secrets will be revealed. DEMO LEADER:  CHAS BRIDGE, Finished by Chas Inc., is a local finish carpenter best known for his unique abilities and skills installing trim. Thomas Building Center called on Chas to help design the door and trim section of their newly opened Designs by Thomas.

Learn all about Geothermal heat pumps, which are similar to ordinary heat pumps but instead of using heat found in outside air, rely on the stable, even heat of the earth to provide heating, air conditioning and, in some cases, hot water. This practical, renewable and efficient energy source can work for everyone almost anywhere. Come learn about costs, installation, operation and benefits. Plenty of Q & A time too! INCREASING HOME COMFORT & VALUE THROUGH PUD REBATES AND INCENTIVES    

Wouldn’t it be great if you could multiply your weatherization project dollars with public funds? Well, you can! This presentation will tell you all about weatherization and energy efficiency rebate$, incentive$and project benefit$available to Clallam County PUD customer-homeowners as well as customers building new homes. If you’re ready to lower your electric bill while increasing the comfort of your home, then this is the workshop for you. Demo Leader: mattias Järvegren, Clallam County PUD Utility Services Advisor, manages Clallam PUD’s residential, commercial and industrial weatherization and renewable energy projects and has been involved with over 800 residential and 50 commercial energy conservation projects in Clallam County, saving enough energy in the process to power 140 homes for a full year.

Learn about the latest industrial advances that have resulted in the ever increasing popularity of wind power as a residential and commercial power source. Ever think about a career in this rapidly growing industry of the future?  Steve will also briefly outline the educational demands of the industry and what it takes to become a skilled turbine technician. SPIN YOUR METER BACKWARDS: SOLAR ELECTRICITY FOR YOUR HOME

Grid-tied PV (photovoltaic solar electricity) is appropriate for any home or business connected to the utility grid with good solar exposure.  New federal tax credits and state production incentives, price reductions for solar modules, and local financing options make this the best time to produce your own clean electricity from the sun. BACKYARD COMPOSTING

Organic waste makes up 18-25% of the waste going to the landfill.  Why ship it off the Peninsula when it can be recycled close to home? Composting yard waste and kitchen scraps is one of the best and easiest things you can do to reduce waste and build great soil for your yard. Learn how to compost yard waste in piles, bins, and turning systems.  Learn how to compost food waste using worm bins, food digesters, and by garden burial. Beginners welcome. Participants will receive a copy of the booklet Home Composting Made Easy. DEMO LEADER: HELEN FREILICH is the Waste Reduction Specialist for the City of Port Angeles and the coordinator of Clallam County Master Composters, a volunteer group devoted to teaching the art and science of composting.
